Yes. The ability triggers when blockers are declared, and will resolve before the combat damage step.

Yes, it acts as a replacement effect for being blocked by any sort of creature.

Therefore, technically if a creature is destroyed and no longer there to block, the damage of Engulfing Slagwurm could go over the creature if it has some way of obtaining trample.

No combat damage, and life gain? Ba-roken!

And it isn't even a mythic.

@cardcoin: well, it's not a replacement effect. it's just an effect that results in it not being blocked past the end of the declare blocker step.

@cardcoin & sporkife: Actually, as far as I'm aware, the Slagwurm is still considered blocked, so no damage goes through to the defending player. In damage calc, it deals it's power in damage to a creature which is, effectively, no longer there. It still had a blocker assigned to it though, so no damage is dealt to the player. I'm not sure how it would work with trample, though. Possibly in that case it DOES do 7 damage, since the lethal damage for a creature which has already been destroyed is 0.

bleh, poor choice of words. If it had trample it would deal combat damage equal to its power to the defending player, but it's still considered blocked.
