Does Generous Gift create a token if it does not destroy the target?

I was wondering if any spell like Generous Gift or Reduce to Memory would still create the token if it targets King of the Oathbreakers, as it phases out when being target of a spell.

Both spells would be countered by the rules of the game for having no legal targets (fizzle) if they target a King of the Oathbreakers who subsequently phases out. This means that no token will be created. However; if they fail to destroy the creature for another reason (let's say an Armor of Shadows in response) the token will still be created.
