Does Indestructible prevent sacrificing effects?

Asked by Fanfax 14 years ago

If a spell causes you to sacrifice a creature on the field can spell Withstand Death cancel the sacrifice?

No. Indestructible just means destroy effects cannot destroy it. Sacrifice effects and going to 0 Toughness affect the creature as usual- it goes to the graveyard. However, something like Naturalize cannot destroy your Darksteel Colossus . Lightning Bolt (or quite a few Lightning Bolt s) will.

Damage doesn't reduce toughness, so Lightning Bolt will never kill an indestructible creature. Grasp of Darkness and similar cards can though, as can Contagion Engine and other sources of -1/-1 counters, such as any infect creature. Sacrifice effects are unaffected by indestructibility, shroud and protection.

Oops on the lightning bolt. But I'm right about the rest, right?

@Carn13

Juffowup pretty much stated it correctly. Damage effectively doesn't do anything to indestructible creatures. Neither will effects that state "Destroy target X"

Things that will reduce power and toughness or force you to sacrifice creatures will on the other hand cause issues... Hence why cards like World Queller or Consuming Vapors work so well.

Hope this helps.
