does Koth of the Hammerfoil's emblem stack?

Asked by Champion 13 years ago

how about if i have two emblems, did the effect of tapping get doubled? if not, why if a player cast a spell and having 2 emblems from venser, he can exile two lands?

Koth of the Hammer

Venser, the Sojourner

Note the way the emblem is worded. It says simply that for the rest of the game, every mountain you control has that ability. It's as if all of a sudden, every Mountain on your side of the field suddenly had "[Tap]: Deal 1 damage".

If you put a second emblem out there, it does exactly that - a second time. It gives your mountains a second ability that reads exactly the same as the first: "[Tap]: Deal 1 damage".

So now all of your mountains, in effect, all read:

[Tap]: Add R to your mana pool

[Tap]: Deal 1 damage to target creature or player

[Tap]: Deal 1 damage to target creature or player

So while you COULD put two Koth-emblems out, it's completely redundant because all it does is give your mountains two of the exact same ability.

Venser's works the way it does because it's worded quite differently. It's not giving an ability to your permanents; it's essentially changing the way the rules of the game work for you.

It's sort of adding a hardwired response trigger to the game rules that applies only to you. You cast a spell, you exile a permanent. As soon as you get the emblem out, that's just how things work for you. (Note that it's mandatory!)

If you have two out, there's two such triggered abilities that both activate and go on the stack in response to you casting a spell. They both activate in response to you casting a spell, so they both go off.

With Koth, no the damage does not stack. When it gives an emblem that says "Moutains you control have "T This land deals one damage to target creature of player", having a second emblem with the same wording would give the mountain the exact same ability again, but they would be seperate effects. You would have to choose which one of the two "T deal damage" to activate, not both. This may be confusing, but in short, no.

With Venser, yes, you would get to exile two permenents, or since you stated in your question, you could exile two lands. When ever you cast a spell, both emblems would trigger seperately, so you would be allowed to exile 2 permenents.

This question has benn answered before, but for recap.

With koth emblem, your mountains gain the ability : Tap: deal 1 damage to target player or creature.

with 2 emblems, the mountains get the same ability twice. So a mountain textbox will read :

Tap : add R to your mana pool.

Tap: deal 1 damage to target player or creature.

Tap: deal 1 damage to target player or creature.

Conclusion:Your mountains will either tap for one effect or the other, so the emblems are not stackable.

On the other hand, Venser's emblem has the triggered ability. With 2 of venser's emblems in play each of them will trigger when you cast a spell, and go on stack in any order you want (you must choose target on triggering ability going on stack). So you get the chance to exile 2 permanents (each for one emblem).
