Does lifelink stack with other life gaining abilities?

Asked by the_lost_crimson_petal 13 years ago

according to 702.13d - "Multiple instances of lifelink on the same object are redundant."

but if a card had an ability that said something to the effect of "when this creature deals COMBAT damage, you gain that much life" and you gave it lifelink, would you receive double damage in combat? or does the lifelink overwrite the other ability, and you would only gain it once?

I believe that you would gain the life twice. Unless it specifically states lifelink (taking into account the Oracle as some older cards had the effect and it was changed to lifelink) It will not overwrite the other effect if you give a creature with that effect lifelink.

Hope I helped.

Yes, if a creature has both lifelink and something similar to, but not the same as lifelink, then there are 2 separate instances of life gain, so you would gain double life.

Yes, i looked this up a while ago. If they have both abilities then you gain the life twice. The only legal card that has been errated that stated "Whenever this creature deals damage you gain that much life" that was changed to lifelink later was [Loxodon Warhammer]

They changed it so that Lifelink's life that is gained is a Static effect and the other ability isn't.

Here's a thing from MTG Salvation-http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Lifelink

"All older cards with the ability "Whenever this permanent deals damage, you gain that much life." that received errata to change that ability to "lifelink" have reverted to their original wording with the exception of Loxodon Warhammer, which had been printed with the word "lifelink" on its most recent printing in 10th Edition."

"702.13a Lifelink is a static ability. Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that sources controller, or its owner if it has no controller, to gain that much life (in addition to any other results that damage causes)."
