Does my Etched Champion die?
Asked by Holmesb3 14 years ago
Say I have an Etched Champion out and it has metal craft from two other creature artifacts. Then say the opponent casts a colored ability or spell that destroys all creatures in play. Does my Etched champion die even though he has metal craft but loses it through the process?

desevrus is correct any board wipe would kill any creature with protection even Progenitus unless it was Consume the Meek however you can also kill creatures with with prot with any global damage based spells as long as they dont target the creature like Chandra Nalaar 's last ability or Plague Wind is another nasty non-target destruction.

I thought the DEBT rule meant global damage did nothing

Right, with Chandra Nalaar 's ultimate, the creature WOULD not be protected from the ability per se, but the damage reduced to zero.

@KrazyCaley Is there a spell that makes other spells colorless?

Moonlace is always available. Ghostly Flame also comes to mind. Thran Lens doesn't work on spells, but permanents.

Your Etched Champion dies. Protection from is not a catch-all. A creature with protection from something can not be 1) Damaged by, 2) Blocked by, 3) Enchanted by, or 4) Targeted by anything that has the defined characteristic. If it doesn't target or deal damage then the destroy all creatures effect kills your creature. So if it was say, a Day of Judgement that was cast, then your Etched Champion would die.
