Drawing then Discarding

Asked by xeratheenigma 14 years ago

say you have no cards in hand and you use [Thought Courier]'s ability to draw a card then discard a card can you cast the spell after drawing it but before discarding it thus making it so you discard nothing (to make it easier lets say the spell you draw is an instant).

i'm pretty sure i know the answer just wanted to make sure though.

The answer is no.

No player has priority to respond during a spell or ability (that I know of). It isn't the same as responding to the ability on the stack. This ability has already resolved.

Priority allows you to take actions, such as casting a spell or activating an ability.

ok here is how it would work... you have [thought courier] on the field, tap it now lets say you have [basking rootwalla] in your hand and you draw [leap]. because [thought courier] 's ability has already started to resolve (you drew a card) you cannot play the card you drew ([leap]) but you could play [basking rootwalla] because of the madness ability... make sense?

Madness abilities are activated right after they are discarded.

So the steps are: Activate Thought Courier . Ability goes on stack. Resolves. Draw a card and discard a card (Basking Rootwalla ). Activate madness ability. Nothing happens in between the Thought Courier 's ability. :]
