FNM how does it work?
Asked by Resurrector_of_the_Soulslayer 13 years ago
On FNM days how does everything work? Is it always standard decks or is it sealed or does it change? And what are the winnings? I seen in past years FNM foil cards. Do they still give those out to winners? I'm just wondering because once a month I might be able to play, and I would like to know what deck to bring. Standard? Legacy? Or money for sealed? I'm new to all this. Oh and do u need a DCI number to play?

fnm is only standard and normally with a 5 dollar fee. most places will give away the foil fnm/dci cards usually a specific card for placing at certain rank and another card or two is handed out randomly to other participants. winnings will depend on how many people show up to a tournament. and yes you will need a dci number

Format varies by location, but is often constructed Standard. Promos are distributed by the host as they see fit - either randomly or to top finishers. There's a small entry fee ($5, eh?) and the first time you go the store will provide you with a form to fill out that will give you a DCI number.

Aye - all of the above answers are correct.
Most commonly FNM is a Standard Constructed Event, but some locations switch it up. They have free reign to run it as nearly any format.
Organizers receive packs of 4 of each FNM foil and usually give 1 away for first and are suggested to give at least one away as a door prize. (this is not always done however). As a core store organizer, I usually ran Standard Constructed for 5 bucks, giving the foil promo for first and second, and 2 as door prizes. Then dropped 1.5 packs per player into a prize pool for 1st - 3rd and if enough people played 4th usually got at least 1 pack.
This is not always how it is done, but its a common setup.
Yes you need a DCI number, your local store you plan to play at should be able to provide you a signup card there which can be used immediately after filling it out. Sadly rewards was quashed so that perk is gone, but at least your DCI# translates into a RPGA number for WPN D&D events too.

It varies, but your best bet is to call ahead to the location you plan on going to and asking for information.
