GAAIV and Overrule cost reduction?

Asked by Kcin 4 months ago

Grand Arbiter Augustin IV reduces cost of blue and white spells by one each (for a max of - 2)

If i am casting Overrule with x=5 (from my mana sources) can i make my opponent basically pay 7 (7-2 reduced =5)?

Yes, this is how the interaction works. This is becasue of how casting a spell is order : you choose a value for before you have to pay for the cost(s). [Eg. You cast the spell choosing the value of to be 7. You then apply any reductions to cost - from Grand Arbiter Augustin IV - and then pay the costs of the spell.

If you want something to bring back to your table, here are the steps to casting a spell I found somewhere on reddit:

  1. Move it to the stack

  2. Choose modes, declare splices, and declare any additional/alternative costs (if applicable). Declare the value of X (if applicable). Declare what specific form of hybrid and phyrexian mana you will be paying (e.g. 2 life, U for a U/W cost)

  3. Choose targets (if applicable)

  4. Announce how an effect will be divided (if applicable)

  5. Check if everything looks good so far or did you take an illegal action (if so, roll back to before step 1)

  6. Take the base or alternative cost. Add any additional costs (whether chosen or imposed). Subtract any cost reducers. Finally, apply any effects (Trinisphere) that affect the total cost. Cost is now locked in (important if you sacrifice a cost reducer as part of paying the cost)

  7. Activate mana abilities

  8. Pay the cost

  9. Any effects that modify the characteristics of the spell apply

  10. Spell is now cast. Any relevant triggered abilities strigger.
