how does Darien, King of Kjeldor work if you have souls attendent/Soul Warden on the field and you take lethal damage?

Asked by SwiftDeath 14 years ago

because all the triggers are static abilities they would trigger all at once so would u die from lethal damage or would you live and get a lot of soldier tokens?

Well let's say you have Darien, King of Kjeldor and you have one Soul Warden out. You are dealt 5 damage. You obtain 5 1/1s and heal 5 life. In the end you net no life change and get 5 1/1s.

No let's say you have 2 Soul Warden s out instead. In this case you would get the 5 1/1s but you would heal 10 (2 for each) and you would net 5 life gain.

However, let's consider that you were only at 3 life when they dealt you 5 damage. The abilities would have to trigger in order for you to net no life chage (or gain life).

So, you are dealt 5 damage, but the 1/1 tokens would come in after you are dealt the damage and you would gain life after the tokens come in buuuuuut you would die before the tokens would come in and before you would gain life, therefor you would lose the match.

The triggers aren't static abilities: they're triggered abilities. As such, they go on the stack and can be responded to. Unfortunately, you die from state-based effects for taking lethal damage before you can resolve or respond to them.

ok so in short the trigger abilities occur on the stack and by losing all your life the other abilities never get the chance to activate.

Yessir. When a player goes to zero life, a state-based action (you can think of it as "faster than the stack") occurs when any player would gain priority. This kills the player, and when a player leaves the game they remove all spells and abilities from the stack as well as all permanents they own.
