How does Gideon Jura work?

Reference Gideon Jura

How does he work exactly? From what I know plainswalker abilities are played as sorcery's. So what would be the point in making creatures attack him, if he wasn't indestructable? Other than to save your own health

they all attack him next turn, and you can of course block the attacks. you can then on your next turn use his second ability to destroy any of his creatures that is tappend, and it should have cleared blockers so you can attack. gideons first ability is awesome, and can be invaluable in the right situation. playtest it a bit, am sure you'll see the benifit.

Gideon Jura is good to use if the opponent has no creatures that turns, as well no haste. It gives you a turn where you can't personally be attacked.

He is a control planeswalker mostly...

+2: tap all creatures an opponent controls ( hopefully block or Condemn enough to keep him alive). This could be useful to get the first hit in on a stalemate or if you're sure that they won't be able to kill Gideon Jura its perfect set up to use his second ability.

-2: destroy anything that is stupid enough to swing or that attacked last turn or even something that taps to use an ability(Birds of Paradise , Royal Assassin , Stoneforge Mystic , Steel Overseer etc.. (just search for creatures that have a tap ability to see how many things gideon could pop as soon as he enters the battlefield there are ~65 in standard).

oh and Gideon Jura is not indestructible. something like Doom Blade can still destroy him while he is a creature.

So...the turn i drop Gideon, i cannot use his 0 ability?

you can use his 0 ability but you can't attack with him. he'd just sit there being a creture. I wouldn't advise this.

i would just like to point out that you can not kill gideon with a card like doom blade, because even when he is a 6/6 human knight he is still a plainswalker. so cards that target creatures do nothing to him it even says it on the card. if you want to kill him with a sorcery you need one that kills a permanent.

also im not sure you would have to wait to attack if you used his o ability because he is already in play so when he becomes a creature he would not have summoning sickness. im fairly certain of this because your not summoning him as a creature he just is one for that turn as well as a plainswalker. hope this helps

never mind gideon can be killed by cards that target crreatures when he is a creature because he is both a creature and a plainswalker like how an atifact creature is an artifact and a creature, My bad. however you can attack with him right away because he is never summoned. because if it worked the way popeyroach said he would never be able to attack because every turn you make him a creature you would be summoning him and he would always have sickness.

everything nightwolf has said is wrong, with the exception of the part where he admits to being wrong about the doom blade. gideon, like all manlands (e.g. Inkmoth Nexus ) would suffer summoning sickness the turn they enter the battlefield if you turn them into creatures. the next turn they don't have summoning sickness because they havn't entered the battlefield this turn. the card, which is a permenant, just changes it's type until the end of turn. This is not the same as entering the battlefield.

August 30, 2011 2:58 p.m.

nightwolf445, note that summoning sickness is a property inherent to a card as a permanent. All permanents have summoning sickness, but only creatures are affected by it. If a permanent becomes a creature on the turn in which is entered the battlefield or entered the control of its current controller, it will be affected by summoning sickness until it goes through its controller's untap step or until it stops being a creature - whichever one comes first.

Unless a card specifically states that it does not affect cards of certain card types, they affect any card regardless of their other card types. For example, Doom Blade does not say "Destroy target nonblack, non-Planeswalker creature." It may therefore destroy an animated nonblack planeswalker.

no, no, these combos work, but what you do is get a gideon avenger out on the field with gideon jura, then have a allll of your opponents creatures attack gideon(great when playing a token deck) let gideon jura die and take all the damage to himself. then because your all your opponents creatures attacked and killed gideon and now all tapped, your gideon avenger is all beefed up and your opponent is wide open for a huge single gideon avenger attack. Bam. thats game. thats why they are called gideon avengers i think. cause the win the game for you after gideon sacrifices himself
