How does shroud work and what is the difference between shroud and protection?
Asked by Legendinc 14 years ago
I know I can't target a creature with shroud with spells or abilities, but i have a couple questions about shroud, and on another note, the keyword "protection"
but how about enchantments that deal with everything on the field? Say...you play Honor of the Pure and then a few turns later you equip Kor Skyfisher with Whispersilk Cloak
would that creature still get the +1/+1 bonus?
and about protection, how does it differentiate from shroud? other than the specific thing the card is protected from (protection from red, protection from artifacts, protection from kithkins etc....)
for example, i have Guardian of the Guildpact . I can't target the creature with Giant Growth since its a single color but my opponent can [[lightning helix] it.
but what about Wrath of God ? will Guardian of the Guildpact 's ability protect it from the monocolor card Wrath of God ?

So, Wrath of God will work on Guardian of the Guildpact because (1) it does not "target" and (2) it uses the word "destroy" and not "damage."

for questin one: yes the skyfisher would get the +1/+1 bonus from HotP because shroud does not protect creatures from global effects such as Pyroclasm , Wrath of God , and etc.
for question two: the difference between shroud and lets say protection from red is quite a bit. shroud only prevents a permanent from being targeted by spells and abilities. where as a permanent with pro red cant be targeted by red spells or abilites, cant be blocked by red creatures, prevents all damage that would be dealt by red sources, and cant be enchanted or equipped with red permanents.(note I put the equip part in due to colored artifacts i.e. Demonspine Whip )
and as for your example with guardian of the guildpact Wrath would kill it because it is a global spell and does not target the guardian, but Pyroclasm would not kill the guardian it may be a global spell that doesnt target creatures but the reason it doesnt work is because it deals damage to creatures (which would be prevented by the guardian's protection) not destroy them.
hope this helps

Global effects will still work on a creature with shroud, aka Honor of the Pure . Pretty much anything that does not say "target" will go through.
Protection follows the acronym DEBT (Damage, Enchant/Equip, Block, Target). Protection will stop all of those specific terms. Shroud, as you may have guess, will only stop the creature from being "targeted".
