How exactly does Phantom Beast work....

So I was wondering Phantom Beast says that you sacrifice the creature if it becomes a target of a spell or ability, so here's my questions, Does the entire spell or ability play out even though the creature is being sacrificed?
Okay, one more question... so if the have a spell that says to return target permanent to hand then discard a card from your hand. Does the discarding still happen?

i'm assuming this question relates to the Phantom Beast question
and the answer (at least what I think) is that no, the discard doesn't happen, because if say your opponent tries to Recoil Phantom Beast , the creature's ability would go on the stack first, and sac itself. Recoil has no legal target anymore, so its countered when it tries to resolve.
i think.

That's correct. All instances of "targeting" have become invalid, therefore the whole spell is countered. It's the same process for normally countering a spell, everything on the spell gets chucked out.

Phantom Beast
If Phantom Beast becomes the target of a spell or ability, Phantom Beast 's ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of that spell or ability. Phantom Beast 's ability will resolve (causing it to be sacrificed) first. Unless the spell or ability has another target, it will then be countered when it tries to resolve for having no legal targets.
