How many times does Wing Puncture choose a target?

Asked by Kalani 14 years ago

Or for that matter any spell that has one initial target that then targets something else. I have a couple of confusing instances I'd like folks to weigh in on.

First: if you cast Wing Puncture on Precursor Golem , is it copied once for each golem in play, or is it not copied because it has to target another creature as well?

Second: If you cast Wing Puncture on a flying creature equipped with Livewire Lash , and then target the same creature with the damage effect, will it activate the lash just once, or twice?

first off, Precursor Golem or any of the golem tokens does not have flying

which is a condition of Wing Puncture

First: It won't activate Precursor's second ability, since the spell does target more than one creature.

Second: I'm not sure, honestly. My gut answer is that it triggers twice since the spell has two separate instances of the word "target", and therefor i think that means it's two separate instances of targeting. Similar logic to why it doesn't trigger Precursor, actually...BUT I'm by no means certain about that answer.

never mind, i had originally thought you mean to use it to deal damage to Precursor Golem , my fault

anyway, if there was only one creature on the field with flying, you could only do damage to that one creature, since Wing Puncture has your creature do damage to a creature with flying

Legend, I think it's safe to assume he knows that, since he mentioned it specifically in the next question. =p There's plenty of ways to give your creatures flying, anyhow.

Er, that looks grumpier than I intended it to when you read it. No offense intended. =)

1) Wing Puncture does not get copied with Precursor Golem . precuror-golem only copies spells that have a single target.

2) I'm not sure what you are referring to as "damage effect." When you cast Wing Puncture , if Wing Puncture 's first target is your flying creature and second target is also your flying creature, then 2 instances of Livewire Lash will trigger and go on the stack. After Wing Puncture resolves, your flying creature will take its own damage.

lol its okay

i'm not thinking straight at the moment since i'm deliriously sick (lesson learned: don't hang around people with 103 degree fevers)

anyways, about the second one,

clarification: you want to play Wing Puncture , targeting a creature you control with flying, and equipped with Livewire Lash then use Wing Puncture 's ability to target the same creature, dealing damage to itself?

umm....any reason why you'd want to kill your own creature?

Legendinc, He would only be killing his own creature if his creature's power is greater than or equal to it's toughness. If his flycreature is like a 3/4 it would only deal 3 damage to itself and wouldn't die (that's assuming it was originally a 1/4 because the Livewire Lash also gives +2/+0)

It's actually an ingenious idea to target the flying creature both times so the Livewire Lash triggers multiple times.

This is a tough one. Should ask the card's creator
