How many tokens can i make using Mishra, Artificer Prodigy and Mirrorworks?
Asked by therichterlens 13 years ago
if i have Mishra, Artificer Prodigy and a Mirrorworks on the table, and i play another Mirrorworks , am i right to assume that i can do the following:
- search for a third mirroworks using Mishra's ability, and place it on the field
- pay 2 for the first mirrorworks, to create a token of the mirrorworks i originally played
- pay 2 for the second mirrorworks to create a token of the mirrorworks i originally played
- pay 2 for the first and second mirrorworks respectively to make tokens of the mirrorworks i searched for using mishra's ability
- i now have 7 mirrorworks on the field?
- now i can get a total of 7 copies of any artifact i play plus search for another using mishra for a total of 9 copies on the field.

edit: 3 is actually no.
so what you do is:
play mirrorworks use mishra's ability to put a mirrorworks into play, pay 2 make a token giving you 3 MWs. then the mirrorworks you originally cast now resolves which you will then pay 6 to make 3 tokens of MW giving you a total of 7 mirrorworks to make tokens with.

Ok, so the important rules to consider are: 111.1a which states, "a copy of a spell is also a spell", however, 706.9 states that "a copy of a spell isn't cast." and with the errata in the Oracle card reference from 601.1 we see that "playing" on Mishra has become casting. So you don't get as many as I originally thought, but I think you get more than you're expecting, let's see if I can properly illustrate why.
When you play your 2nd Mirrorworks both abilities trigger, you pay (2) and now have 2 Mirrorworks and a token of Mirrorworks in play, for a total of three potential activated abilities, then use Mishra, Artificer Prodigy to search for the 3rd one. When the 3rd one comes into play, you pay (6) and get 3 more tokens, for a total of 7 Mirrorworks , 3 actual, and 4 tokens. Then Mishra, Artificer Prodigy triggers from the 3rd Mirrorworks and you put the 4th one into play, you can then pay up to (14), (2) for each of the Mirrorworks already in play, and create 7 more tokens, for a total of 15, 4 actual Mirrorworks and 11 Mirrorworks tokens, if I've done my math right. Then each time you cast an artifact, you can pay (2) and trigger each one, up to the amount of mana you have. I'm pretty sure this is accurate, while taking the pertinent rules into consideration. Sounds awesome!

one flaw is that mishra doesn't actually cast that third mirrorworks he just puts it into play (or onto the battlefield) which prevents him from triggering off of his own ability. so 7 mirrorworks should be correct.
note: his ability only triggers when you cast or play an artifact.

thanks all.
so even if i only have one Mirrorworks and mishra in play, and i play another one, i technically get a total of 3 that turn. the one i played, the token created from the one in play, and the one i search for using mishra's ability. so when i play an artifact land such as Great Furnace after that, i get a total of 6 that turn. (the one i played, the one i search for, and then 1 for each mirrorworks in play). that's so sick!
thanks again!

@xera - thanks for the assist, sometimes I get a little overzealous, LOL.
@therichterlens - Great Furnace won't trigger Mishra, Artificer Prodigy , but it will trigger Mirrorworks , note the "not a spell" on Great Furnace .

note: 3 and 4 should be combined into one step to prevent confusion.
