If Ajani's Pridemate has doublestrike and lifelink would it deal 4 or 5 damage?
Asked by Zgarbas 13 years ago
Ok, say I have an card:Ajani's Pridemate on the table with no counters, along with some other creatures, as well as a True Conviction . I attack with Pridemate and 2 other creatures. Are both strikes from Pridemate worth 2 damage, or does the second strike get +3 because of the lifelink?
But wouldn't he get a +1/+1 for each creature with lifelink?

No, because damage all happens at the same time, so you're only gaining life once.

=/, but according to the gatherer page:
If multiple creatures with lifelink
you control deal combat damage at the same time, the damage dealt by each of those creatures is a separate life-gaining event and Ajani's Pridemate's ability will trigger that many times.
(sorry for being persistent >.<).

No, no, you're absolutely right. Multiple creatures are multiple sources, and that's what it looks for. The Pridemate would basically get a counter for each creature that's dealing damage, and combat would end up being combat damage, gain life from lifelink -> put X counters on the Pridemate, where X is the number of attackers dealing damage -> second combat damage step, gain life from lifelink -> put X counters on the Pridemate again.
From the comp. rules:
118.9. Some triggered abilities are written, "Whenever [a player] gains life, . . . ." Such abilities are treated as though they are written, "Whenever a source causes [a player] to gain life, . . . ." Example: A player controls Ajani's Pridemate, which reads "Whenever you gain life, you may put a +1/+1 counter on Ajani's Pridemate," and two creatures with lifelink. The creatures with lifelink deal combat damage simultaneously. Ajani's Pridemate's ability triggers twice.
While looking up the answer to make sure I had it right the first time, I forgot about the "and two other creatures attacking" part of your question. My bad. =)
Incidentally...this is somewhat scary.

It is scary! True Conviction is a game-ender here.
To wit, assume 2 2/2 tokens and a basic Ajani's Pridemate . Alpha strike against a non-compete or empty board, with True Conviction in play. Double Strike damage takes affect, for a total of 6 damage. Three instances of lifegain trigger, for a total of +6 life. Ajani's Pridemate receives 3 +1/+1 counters.
Normal Damage takes affect, for a total of 9 damage. Three instances of lifegain trigger, for a total of +9 life. Ajani's Pridemate receives 3 +1/+1 counters.
Total Combat Damage: 15
Ajani's Pridemate is now an 8/8, if that matters anymore.

The second would be at 3 damage.
Lifelink as an ability is worded specifically such that it happens at the "same time" as damage, so it would trigger the Pridemate's triggered ability. That gets dealt with and resolved before the second combat damage step, resulting in the Pridemate having a +1/+1 counter for its second swing.
