If Deep-Sea Kraken is suspended and my opponent casts a spell and I counter it do I still get to remove a time counter off of Deep-Sea Kraken?

Deep-Sea Kraken is a creature with "Suspend 9". It also has the text "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, if Deep-Sea Kraken is suspended, remove a time counter from it."
My question is: If an opponent casts a spell, and I counter it, will it still lose a time counter?
Oh PS - if you type the name of a card such as "Deep-Sea Kraken" and then put two '[' in front of it and two ']' behind it (these are square brackets ->> [ [Card Name] ] ), it will turn it into a link like what you see above.
You can try it out here if you'd like, it is very useful so you don't have to type out the abilities of a card you can just type it's name =)

but the card says whenever an opponent PLAYs a spell, not casts. isnt that equivalent to the old language "successfully casts a spell" ?
i could be completely wrong, but the wording seems to me like theres a difference

the wording has changed a bit since that card was printed you no longer "play" spells you "cast" them the only cards that are "played" are land cards

Deep-Sea Kraken
Yes.
Casting a spell just means they cast it from their hand onto the stack successfully. It doesn't necessarily mean it resolved.
So even countered spells still count has spells "cast".
