If I can untap Selesnya Sanctuary when it comes into play, can I tap it for mana before I return a land to my hand?

Asked by Sage25 14 years ago

I have 2 amulet of vigor cards in play, and no lands in play (for whatever reason), if I play Selesnya Sanctuary , it untaps due to amulet of vigor- the question is, does it untap before I have to return the land to my hand? Or can I tap it for WG before I have to return it to my hand?

If so, since I have 2 amulet's out I can tap it twice?

Unless I'm mistaken the condition of "Return a land to your hand" is a state based action and happens immediately. You are unable to do anything in between playing the Selesnya Sanctuary and returning a land to your hand. In your situation here's what would happen:

Play Selesnya Sanctuary , it comes into play untapped, before you can do anything you must return it to your hand because there are no other lands on the field.

I hope this helps. :)

sorry Zylo, Return a Land to your hand is a triggered ability, not a state based effect. What happens is that you have 3 triggered abilities happening at the same time. since you are the active player, you decide the order of simultaneous events. you should pick a stack that looks like this :

AoV Untap

AoV Untap

SS bounce a land

First untap resolves, you chose to tap it for mana, second untap resolves, you again tap it for mana, then you pick it up. 2g2w in mana pool.

Well my bad then. I wasn't too sure about it in the first place but that's how I understood the way it worked. Clearly I was wrong so it's a good thing $ªmHεiπ was here to clear everything up. :)
