If I cast Armored Ascension on my White Knight and in response my opponent casts Lightning Bolt what happens?

Asked by BiggRedd54 13 years ago

i was playing against a red burn deck, and it was my turn, i had a white knight out. I Played a Armored Ascension on my white knight, In response he used lightning bolt (dealt 3 damage) to my knight, and killed it. So does my armored ascension get attached before the lightning bolt hits or can he take out my creature as i attach the aura to me?

yes. When you declare that you are putting the aura on your creature you pass priority to your opponent so he can in turn bolt it.

This is why when someone attaches a Lightning Greaves to a creature, an opponent can destroy the creature in response.

Whenever a player plays a spell or more, before the spells start resolving he(she) must pass the priority, so the other player has the chance to respond.

The spells start resolving once both players pass.

In your case you play a spell that has a target. The spell will remain on the stack, and will not resolve until it's the last on the stack and both players have passed priority.

If your opp played Bolt on that creature, before Armored Ascension will resolve, state based checks are performed and the creature is put to graveyard. Just now the Armored Ascension will try to resolve, but it will be countered upon resolution due to illegal target (now that the knight is gone).
