If I cast Rite of Replication and I copy Mnemonic Wall can I return the rite of replication using the tokens ability?

Asked by Jarrod_0067 14 years ago

I kick Rite of Replication and put 5 copies of Mnemonic Wall in play. My question is: can I bring back Rite of Replication or hasn't it resolved yet so it is still on the stack and not in my graveyard?

It has to actually resolve before you get the Mnemonic Wall s, since that's what the spell does, so yes. You'd be able to get it back.

No problem. You can definitely do some very fiddly stuff with unlimited mana, Rite of Replication and Mnemonic Wall .

You actually get the tokens before the Rite of Replication resolves, but you can still return the Rite of Replication with one of your Mnemonic Wall tokens. !hat happens is this: the Rite of Replication is cast, kicked, targeting the Mnemonic Wall . All players pass priority. The Rite of Replication starts resolving. As part of the spell's resolution, the 5 Mnemonic Wall tokens are put onto the battlefield under your control. What happens then is described in 116.2a (below). Basically, the triggered abilities try to go on the stack, but since a spell is resolving they can't. Then the spell finishes resolving. As the last part of the resolution the spell card (the physical Rite of Replication ) is put into the graveyard. Then, once a player receives priority (which will be you, presumably), all of the triggered abilities that attempted to go onto the stack while a spell was resolving go onto the stack. As the triggered abilities go on the stack you choose targets, and as the physical Rite of Replication is now in the graveyard, you can choose it as a target for your Mnemonic Wall token's ability.

116.2a Triggered abilities can trigger at any time, including while a spell is being cast, an ability is being activated, or a spell or ability is resolving. (See rule 603, Handling Triggered Abilities.) However, nothing actually happens at the time an ability triggers. Each time a player would receive priority, each ability that has triggered but hasnt yet been put on the stack is put on the stack.

@sporkife

Well the triggered abilities never "try" to go on the stack really, as yoda would say they do or do not, there is no try (ok bad joke I know).

In reality the triggering events "happen" during the course of play and the game does nothing about them until it is good and ready. Then when triggered abilities are ready to be checked the abilities associated with events that have occurred since the last time triggered abilities were checked are put on the stack.

Well, no, they do actually trigger, but since the only time that they can't go on the stack is when a spell or ability is resolving, generally we just assume that they trigger once the spell or ability has finished resolving.
