If I equip Taunting Elf with Quietus Spike and attack will it kill creatures even if it deals 0 damage? should I use Gorgon Flail instead? and would firststrike stop death touch?

Asked by djdauenbaugh 13 years ago

I want to make sure I have the mechanics right in my head. 1) If I equip Taunting Elf with a Quietus Spike and attack, will it actually kill creatures dealing 0?

2) Do I instead need Gorgon Flail to deal 1 damage with deathtouch?

3) If Taunting Elf with a Quietus Spike attacks a creature with first strike, does the creature die or does the first strike kill Taunting Elf and state based graveyard before deathtouch?

This is a bunch of questions in one. I'll do my best to answer them all.

  1. Taunting Elf + Quietus Spike = no damage would be dealt because Taunting Elf is a 0/1 creature. No damage dealt means no damage to attach Deathtouch to.
  2. Gorgon Flail + Taunting Elf = a 1/2 Taunting Elf with Deathtouch. If your opponent blocks with all his creatures, you only have 1 damage to assign to a creature. This formula will not be able to kill off all of your opponents creatures (which is what I am assuming you are hoping for). It will, however, kill off one creature because of the 1 Deathtouch damage you get to assign.
  3. Taunting Elf + Quietus Spike or Gorgon Flail + opponent creature with First Strike = your opponent's creature with First Strike would deal First Strike damage to Taunting Elf before any combat damage would be dealt. The same would be true for a creature with Double Strike.
Now, if you want to kill off all your opponent's creatures with Taunting Elf , Equip it with a Basilisk Collar (its cheaper to play and equip than Gorgon Flail or Quietus Spike ) and use Timberwatch Elf s ability, a Giant Growth or any other ability/instant/sorcery to beef it up so you can split the damage between each of the creatures. Only 1 damage needs to be dealt to a creature in order for Deathtouch to do its job. If you find a way to give your Taunting Elf First Strike or Double Strike, the Deathtouch damage would be dealt first and save your Taunting Elf from dying if its toughness isn't high enough to withstand the blocks. Or just pop a Withstand Death on it. Either way.

1) No, deathtouch only works when damage is dealt

2) If you attack with a Taunting Elf equipped with Gorgon Flail , it can deal 1 damage to 1 blocking creature and that 1 creature will die.

3) The first strike damage would kill the Taunting Elf first.

Very informative, and correct answers to a controversial game mechanic. The key is you have to do damage for the deathtouch effect to become valid.

But I've come up with an even BETTER way to apply deathtouch, and it DOESN'T even require any damage dealing... check out my deck here: "Tuktuk Sharpshooter".

You can even use Koth's first ability to destroy your opponents mountains!
