If I have a Magma Phoenix equipped with a Grafted Exoskeleton then I move the exoskeleton to a second Magma Phoenix would the second phoenix die?

Asked by osuchan 13 years ago

The field was me with two magma phoenix and my opponent had some weenie infecters.

"Magma Phoenix 1" had equipped to it; 2x grafted exoskeleton 1x livewire lash

"Magma Phoenix 2" was unequipped

I thought, to make this situation more in my favour, I could equip one of the grafted exoskeleton to "Magma Phoenix 2" and wipe the field with "Magma Phoenix 1" and set myself up for a near instant win (as "Magma Phoenix 1" would give me and my opponent 3 poison counters and wipe the field of his creatures, leaving my 5/5 "Magma Phoenix 2" to hit for 5 more poison)

However, my friend said that as grafted exoskeleton becomes unequipped it would cause "Magma Phoenix 1" to blow up the field, including "Magma Phoenix 2", before equipping to "Magma Phoenix 2". Is this so?

I think it is, because the grafted exoskeleton becomes unequipped before being equipped to the other magma phoenix.

the 1st phoenix dies yes. it becomes unattached. there is no such thing as "unequip" for no reason. to my knowledge at least

both Magma Phoenix die because the equip ability of Grafted Exoskeleton would b at the bottom of the stack ability 1: pay equip cost Grafted Exoskeleton becomes unattached ability 2: Grafted Exoskeleton s second ability triggers ability 3: Magma Phoenix s second ability triggers so the abilities resolve in reverse numerical order 321

Okay. Let's sort this out.

Magma Phoenices are heretofore to be referred to as "A" and "B", "A" being the one initially equipped.

  1. Activate the equip ability of Grafted Exoskeleton targeting "B".
  2. Said equip ability resolves, equipping "B" with the Grafted Exoskeleton .
  3. Grafted Exoskeleton 's triggered unequip ability triggers.
  4. Said unequip ability resolves, destroying "A".
  5. "A"'s triggered into-graveyard ability triggers.
  6. Said triggered ability resolves. Using LKI, it deals 3 damage to each creature and each player - to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters, and to players in the form of poison counters.
Conclusion: "B" is still alive and has infect, but has 3 -1/-1 counters on it. However, you have another 4 power worth of equipment to stick on it, so it's 2 hits at most.

I'm with sporkife on this one. As far as I know, equipment does not become unattached when you pay the equip cost until it attaches to the new creature. So your second phoenix gets the bonus from the equipment before the field gets nuked.

sporkife is correct here.

The event that puts the equipment on "B" (and thus gives it the +2/+2) and the event that kills "A" (triggering its damage-everything event) are one and the same - meaning, the equipment becomes attached to "B" at the same time "A" becomes unattached.

So by the time "A" is scorching the field, "B" has the +2/+2 bonus, so it lives.
