If I have Pyromancer Ascension active and I cast Fireball what is the copy's value for X?

Asked by muffludwig 13 years ago

If I have pyromencer-ascension loaded, and cast Fireball what does the copy do? Is the value of x copied? Or zero?

I'm not sure how to explain it, but I think it is copied as 0 because x is a variable and must be set as you cast it.

I cannot be sure and I'm not sure if I have explained it correctly. Hopefully someone will agree with me.

Per Magic Comp rule 706.9, you would copy the spell at its cost, including the value of X.

So a fireball cast for for 5 colorless 1 red would deal 5 damage, and a copy of said fireball would deal 5 damage as well.

"706.9 To copy a spell or activated ability means to put a copy of it onto the stack; a copy of a spell isn't cast and a copy of an activated ability isn't activated. A copy of a spell or ability copies both the characteristics of the spell or ability and all decisions made for it, including modes, targets, the value of X, and additional or alternative costs..."

It copies the spell as cast, with value of X or kicker (if a kicked spell).

Echo Mage , Fork , Twincast all work the same way.

@xo2 "would retrace put a counter on pyromancer acension?"

That is situational. It would not counter the Pyromancer Ascension if it is alone in the graveyard, but if multiple copies exist, then playing one of them would in fact add the counter. There must be a copy of the spell in the graveyard, when you play it from the graveyard it leaves that field and wouldn't be counted when PA checks for a copy.
