If I use Nim Deathmantle to return Putrefax to the battlefield after I sacrificed it would I have to sacrifice Putrefax on my opponents turn?

Asked by zigkid3 14 years ago

so i was asking the store clerk earlier today about using Nim Deathmantle with Putrefax . i figured i could save putrefax one extra turn by using it, by the time i have to sac putrefax once he's sac'd i can use the deathmantle to bring it back. i agreed with him on that part. but then he says that i will still have to sac it again at the beginning of the opponents end step. that part im not so sure about, because it says sacrifice, and i dont think my opponent can sac it, only me, so would it still apply during the opponents turn or only during my turn? if i do have to sac it at the end of my opponents turn then does that mean in order to constantly bring putrefax back i'd need to have 8 mana total?

Unfortunately he was correct.

Putrefax does not care whose turn the end step happens in. At the beginning of any end step that it is on the battlefield it requires you to sacrifice it.

I have to say, as much as I like the idea, I'm quite sure it doesn't work sadly.

I should stipulate that if you have 8 mana available and it is only a 2 player game you can pay 4 during both end steps to keep him around.

The 2 player game part is because in a 3 player game you would need 12 mana before you were able to untap, 16 in a 4 player game, etc...

He was right. As soon as the beginning of the next End Step rolls around, you have to give up Putrefax.

that's decent if you have 8 mana to get tied up, but a better combo for this purpose would probably be Putrefax + Mimic Vat
