if u can cast a spell with x in its converted mana cost and u can have an ability that lets u play it without paying its mana cost, can u make the x infinite?

yeah i second iLIKEelvs
i do believe that if the CMC is X, like in the case of Grindclock or Chimeric Mass , then X will always be 0 in that situation.

sorry, not Grindclock . Gelatinous Genesis or Genesis Wave works too.

actually to be more specific X = unsecified amount. this amount is 0 by default with 1 added to it's value for every 1 mana paid towards it's mana cost. so if you cast a spell with X in it's cmc without paying it's mana cost X remains as 0.

An easier way to think about it is that the X in the cost is any amount of mana, and the amount of X depends on how much mana you spend on it. Therefore, spending 0 mana on the spell will make X equal 0. This isn't technically what happens, but I find it's the best way to think about it.

An effect that lets you play a spell for free (without paying it's mana cost) refers to converted mana cost. An X spell has a converted mana cost equal to 0+[specified amount of mana] : EG: Gelatinous Genesis has XGG so converted mana cost is 2.
Playing Gelatinous for free will do nothing as X is 0.
There is no such thing as infinite in magic. Whenever a player will go to an infinite loop of creating something (creatures, mana, life, effects), it has to stop somehow (kill a combo part, stop after x loops, and so on) if possible , or the game is a draw. The loop must be interrupted so the game continues. because of that infinite is not a game mechanic: you cannot have infinite life, infinite mana, infinite creatures, or deal infinite damage.
because of that, additional costs to not count towards the free part. YOu still have to pay the costs due to Trinisphere , Thorn of Amethyst , or if you want the bonuses for kicker, you have to pay the kicker costs.

unless I'm mistaken, don't all of the cards that let you play them for free say x has to be 0?
