If you ''may play a spell from your graveyard without paying it's casting cost", then what's X?

Asked by Kalani 14 years ago

are you allowed to pay X as you play it? or are you only allowed to play it if you don't pay it's casting cost? Specifically, if Chandra Ablaze is pullling a fireball out of the GY with her ultimate, could you pay the casting cost of the fireball so that it does it's damage?

No; X is part of the cost, so if you play it without paying the cost, then you, well, don't pay X. X is always zero in these situations.

in cases like this, X will always be 0.

MagnorCriol is correct. X is determined by the mana you pay when you cast the spell, so if you don't pay any mana to play it, X=0

For this X is always zero but if u play a kicker cost sorcery/instant than u can still pay for that because it's in the ability not the actual casting cost of the spell.
