If you regenerate a creature that took infect damage will it keep it's -1/-1 counters?

Asked by supernick 13 years ago

regenerate is "if this creature would die, instead remove it from combat and tap it". so if vatmother is blocked by thrun, the 4 dmg would kill him so instead remove him from combat, tap him and vat is blocked. did she still deal the counters to him?

yes he takes the damage. the counters are permanent, and regenerate does not remove thrun from play.

So when he regenerates and taps he still has the counters on his which means he still dies.

Almost correct supernick. Regenerate will stop a creature from being "destroyed" not death necessarily. So any effect that would cause a creature to be destroyed could be regenerated. When a creature takes lethal damage it would be destroyed as a state base action.

Infect deals damage in the form of -1/-1 counters. This does not cause lethal damage, instead if a creature has 0 or less toughness it is put into the graveyard as a state base action.

Hope that was informative. :]

The regenerate ability doesn't work if the creature's toughness is below 1. Think of it this way: I have a 4/4 regenerate that gets 4 -1/-1 counters on it, so it's a 0/0. I regenerate it, but it's still a 0/0, so it dies again, so I regenerate it again, but it dies again... see how it would die anyway?

Oh, right... the answer. Thrun, the Last Troll dies.

Well it does not die.

Regenerate reads : whenever a creature would be destroyed......

destroy effects and lethal damage are protected by regeneration.

But if a creature has 0 toughness, it does not die (destroyed, killed), it is put into the graveyard as SBE's are checked. You cannot work against SBE's.
