In constructed play, do I need to include basic lands in my sideboard?
Asked by MagnorCriol 14 years ago
I can't seem to find a specific "yes" or "no" on this, and I'd appreciate the clarity.
If I have cards in my sideboard that will noticeably alter my mana requirements when I sub them in, am I allowed to swap out basic lands for other basic lands for "free"? Could I shift from a U/R to a U/B deck, for instance, and shift from 10 islands-10 mountains to 10 islands-10 swamps?
I know I've (almost) never seen basic lands included in sideboards, but I also don't think I've seen a stunt like this pulled so there wasn't a need. I also seem to remember hearing something about basic lands are "free" subs - but I think that may have been at a draft, where I know sideboard rules are a bit different.

in standard type 2 constructed your sideboard can consist of only 15 cards these can be any type of card land, instant, planeswalker and etc.
but if its not in your sideboard or mainboard you cant put it in your deck while participating in a standard constructed tournament
there is no free subs in constructed

Any cards you intend to substitute while sideboarding must be included in your 15 card sideboard without exception.

You saw basic lands hit the SB alot towards the end of the Jund Reign as they tried to combat spreading seas by siding into RUB deck instead.
So in other words Yes, they would have to be included in your Sideboard.

Basic lands must be included in your sideboard in normal constructed. In drafts, your sideboard is whatever you drafted that isn't in your main deck plus however many basic lands you want.
