In response to Quest for the Holy Relic being sacrificed, can I sac my Vampire Hexmage?

Asked by Legendinc 13 years ago

I've never been good about understanding how the stack & priority works, but say I'm playing against White Weenie Quest for the Holy Relic Deck, and said enchantment is out, with 5 counters on it.

my opponent chooses to take all the counters off of Quest for the Holy Relic to grab an Argentum Armor

if i had Vampire Hexmage on my side of the field, could I, in response to him sacrificing Quest for the Holy Relic , could I sacrifice my own Vampire Hexmage and remove all the Quest Counters?

I have a feeling my opponent would win this one, but better to be safe then sorry

Sacrificing is a cost and thus happens faster then the stack so No, you can't stop a 5 countered Quest with Hexmage as they sac it for the payment of the effect and so there is no longer a card or counters to remove.

Your best option is to sac Hexmage in response to either your opponent casting a creature or Quest for the Holy Relic 's first ability while it has 4 counters on it. It will still end up with one counter on it, but you've stopped it getting dangerous. Once Quest hits five counters, the only way to really stop it going off is something like Trickbind , to counter the ability while it is on the stack. Or Krosan Grip , if it's your turn.

The quest sacrifices as part of paying the cost, so there's nothing for Vampire Hexmage to remove counters from.

you cant do anything about the quest but you can either destroy the creature that gets the equipment or blow up the equipment

you have to do it in response to them casting it for the 4th creature once they cast the fifth you don't have a chance to respond to the 5th as the quest triggers when it is cast. Therefore gaining the 5th counter before you get the chance to remove the counters with Vampire Hexmage .

alrighty so here are the rulings if you have any other questions.

  1. If you cast a creature spell, Quest for the Holy Relic's triggered ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of it. The triggered ability will resolve before the spell does.
  2. The activated ability doesn't target the creature the Equipment will be attached to. It may be attached to a creature with shroud, for example. You don't choose which creature it will be attached to until you actually attach it. Once you choose which creature to attach it to, it's too late for players to respond.
  3. You may activate Quest for the Holy Relic's activated ability even if you control no creatures, or you control no creatures that can be equipped. In that case, you'll simply put the Equipment card you find onto the battlefield without attaching it to anything.
