is MtG online free?

I don't want to download it before I know exactly what it is/if it costs anything

Yeah MTGO itself is free, but unless you want to use the starter decks given to you, all the cards/packs cost money.

You can play for free once you get an account (10$ with Wizards, comes with preconstructed decks), but getting online cards is just like getting paper cards... it costs money.

MTGO (Magic the Gathering Online) is available as a free download, or you can get a CD from a cardshop if you ask. (they should have some free disc's)...

Like above you only get starter decks to play with that you can get access to likewise if you walk into an authorised Magic trader. (i think!) This doesn't do too well for playing the game, but it gives you a taster of how the game SHOULD be played.

If you dive into the system...

The control system can be annoying, there are options to skip most basic stuff, but the way the interactions are on the system can be a double edged sword. It can teach you fantastic things about interactions that you might not have otherwise noticed when playing paper based MTG. BUT... A deck that has a lot of triggers (like Soul Sisters) can be VERY time consuming to go through each of the triggered effects.

The prize support (according to some folk) can be less worth your weight.

There is also word on the street that if you obtain a complete playset of cards on the online system, you can trade them into wizards for a paper version of the playset.

Hope this helps

Just to stick up for MTGO here, I like it very well- true, you have to pay all over again for your cards, but if you run sufficiently cheap decks you'll be fine. The UI is very good, there's ALWAYS a game or tournament to be found, and everything works very well, generally.
