is the attrition induced by Grasp of Darkness considered as damage?

so if my opponent uses Gideon Jura 's 0 effect, and i target it with grasp-of-darknes, is grasp's -4 to toughness effect prevented?

Nope. -4/-4 is specifically -4/-4, not damage. Technically damage just attacks the toughness of a creature. You could double up on Grasps and send him packing to the graveyard.

Flavorwise, think of it as Gideon getting his strength and life drained out by a spell rather than physically damaged.

Grasp of Darkness ignores Safe Passage . If they block your infect creature and use Safe Passage though, their blocker won't get any -1/-1 counters.
