Is the second part of Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas' first abilitiy mandatory if don't take an artifact from the top 5?

(+1: Look at the top five cards of your library. You may reveal an artifact card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.)

To clarify, I'm asking whether or not you need to put the 5 cards on the bottom of your library if you didn't take one.

yes. the key words being "you may". present in the sentence with instructions to put a card in your hand, and not in the sentence declaring you put the cards on the bottom of your library. think of it as a variation of scry only you see more cards, but are required put them on the bottom of your library.

I'm pretty sure it's still mandatory because, the optional part is revealing an artifact from the Top 5 cards, not putting them on the bottom of the deck. If you don't draw an artifact you just don't get the choice to reveal an artifact and put it in your hand.

I'm inclined to believe both of you, but it really depends on how you read it. If sentence #3 is contingent upon #2 happening in the first place, then backyardmetal is right. On the other hand, TonsOfGarbage makes a good point because sentence #3 is on its own, so the last action seems mandatory and the rest being all 5 cards...

im not sure what you mean since we both said pretty much the same thing. whether you get draw an artifact or not, you would still put the 5 cards on the bottom of your library.
