When Emeria, The Sky Ruin is in play and it criteria are meet (control seven plains) at the same time Sustaining Spirit is in play and its the beginning of my upkeep can I not pay the Sustaining Spirit s Cumulative Upkeep and then use Emeria, The Sky Ruin to return it to the battlefield?
I do not know that they go off at the same time. What is the rule for upkeep. Does upkeep happen at the beginning of your upkeep or any time during the phase. Emeria, The Sky Ruin specifies timing. If they do go off at the same time thaimaishuu is right. If they do not then no.

ok rules are :
702.21a Cumulative upkeep is a triggered ability that imposes an increasing cost on a permanent. Cumulative upkeep [cost] means At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent. Then you may pay [cost] for each age counter on it. If you dont, sacrifice it. If [cost] has choices associated with it, each choice is made separately for each age counter, then either the entire set of costs is paid, or none of them is paid. Partial payments arent allowed.
503.1. First, any abilities that trigger at the beginning of the upkeep step and any abilities that triggered during the turns untap step go on the stack. (See rule 603, Handling Triggered Abilities.)
612.6e If two or more objects would receive a timestamp simultaneously, such as by entering a zone simultaneously or becoming attached simultaneously, the active player determines their timestamp order at that time.
By these findings I would say that thaimaishuuis correct

I think, actually (might be wrong though, you should check) that since both abilities trigger at the beginning of the upkeep and Emeria, The Sky Ruin 's ability requires a target, regardless of which way you stack them, you can't put the Emeria ability on the stack targeting the Sustaining Spirit because the Sustaining Spirit isn't in the graveyard yet to be targeted.
On the other hand, I've had Bad Romance on repeat for about an hour, so that might be clouding my judgment.

You are right sporkife. For some reason I thought that triggered abilities do not need targets until after they start to resolve. =/

I know what it is, the stupid "intervening 'if' clause" threw me off. I keep thinking the check is the only requirement. Gets me every time.

Kind of what I thought. Not what I wanted by I understand. Thank you everyone.

You can. When multiple triggered abilities you control go on the stack at the same time, you may choose the order. So you would put Sustaining Spirit at the top of the stack and Emeria, The Sky Ruin at the bottom. This ensures that the spirit is in the graveyard when your Emeria's ability resolves.
