mimic vat + nim deathmantle
Asked by landot 14 years ago
If I sacrifice a nontoken creature and I have both a Mimic Vat and a Nim Deathmantle on the battlefield, can I both use both of their abilities -- imprint it on the mimic vat and then return it to the battlefield with deathmantle equipped?
Hear me out: both artifacts' abilities trigger on a creature going to the graveyard. But Nim Deathmantle doesn't say 'return [whatever] from graveyard to battlefield', it just says 'return it to battlefield.' all that it cares about is whether the card went to the graveyard, not whether it stayed there.

Sorry it does not work.
Even if you some how were able to return the exiled creature to the battlefield, you won't be able to use Mimic Vat 's activating ability. The exiled card is no longer exiled and therefore no longer linked to Mimic Vat (imprinted cards are said to be "linked" to the imprinting card). There is nothing for Mimic Vat to copy.

Also, if the creature card that triggered Nim Deathmantle 's second ability is removed from the graveyard before it resolves (i.e. via exiled), then you may still pay 4, but nothing will be returned to the battlefield.

Alright so basically what happens here is
- You sacrifice the creature
- Nim Deathmantle trigger goes on the stack
- Mimic vat's trigger goes on the stack
Nim's trigger now resolves but it no longer has a valid target(as the card is exiled) and thus can't resolve.

i get the impression that the answer is no because it seems to me that the deathmantle is returning the creature to the battlefield from the graveyard but this one is kinda tricky so i'm not a hundred percent sure
