Mutate creature as commander

Asked by babos86 5 months ago

If you have a commander with mutate (for example Vadrok, Apex of Thunder) and it's in play. When for any reason it returns on your commander zone does the mutate cost also increase by 2 mana so you can play it again or only the cost to play it as a creature increases by 2 mana?

Since Mutate is an alternate casting cost, commander tax still applies to it. I used to play both Brokkos, Apex of Forever and Vadrok, Apex of Thunder a couple of years ago. Brokkos is able to get around it a bit better with his Mutate from GY ability.

Here's the relevant text from the Mutate MtG Wiki page, plus the linked source in the Wiki from the Ikoria release notes:

"Mutate represents an alternative cost. To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost you're paying (such as the alternative cost of mutate), add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions. The converted mana cost of the spell remains unchanged, no matter what the total cost to cast it was and no matter whether an alternative cost was paid. [7] "
