Protean Hydra?
Asked by Zeroptimus 14 years ago
Newbie question: Let's say a 5/5 Protean Hydra is hit for 6. The card specifies that you prevent the damage and remove that many counters from it. At the beginning of the next end step, you add double that many to it. In this way, can the Hydra be killed with Lethal damage, or does reducing it to 0 automatically end it?
When toughness is 0 the creature is not destroyed, it is simply placed into the controlling player's graveyard, destroyed implies the possibility of regeneration. A fun combo, however, is Leyline of Vitality with Protean Hydra , the hydra will lose all of its counters until but will still be a 0/1 so it would still double its counters.

Alright, I had the wrong wording with "destroyed" but the message got across. IT is put into the graveyard, my bad, because it's true: you wouldn't be able to regenerate it.

I don't know if I'm aloud to ask this here but it pertains to the Protean Hydra . If you have say, card:Gaea's Anthem or Glorious Anthem or card:Marshal's Anthem if the damage is prevented and tokens are removed would it survive then because it would be redused to zero, but the static effect of the enchantments makes them a 1/1 insead of a 0/0? Or am I reading into that wrong.

If any creature's toughness equals 0 it is destroyed. If a 5/5 Protean Hydra is hit for 6 the the 5 +1/+1 counters will be removed and it will be destroyed.
