Protection from phylactery counters?

I've got Etched Champion , with metalcraft online, and Phylactery Lich . Can I put the phylactery counter on my Etched Champion which now has protection from all colors?

Yes you can, because Phylactery Lich doesn't target the creature you are putting the phylactery token onto.

Yes you can, Phylactery Lich does not target and therefore can put a counter on your Etched Champion even though it has protection from colors. If Phylactery Lich read "Put a counter on TARGET artifact you control," as opposed to just "artifact you control," the answer would be entirely different.
