Put into play with tap ability use ability?

Asked by hockalOOgy 14 years ago

If i play a creature that has an ability that is activated by tapping, does the ability get activated because of summoning sickness?

The ability will only ever be activated when you tap the creature. By your wording it seems like you might think that when you play a creature it comes into play tapped, but that's not normally the case. Ever. However, because the creature has summoning sickness you can not use it's ability because it requires you to tap the creature, which summoning sickness prevents you from doing so. Had the ability only cost mana such as Looming Shade then you could use it because the creature does not have to tap.

i think the idea behind the question is that creatures come into play tapped because of summoning sickness. Summoning sickness only makes the creature unable to tap or attack that turn, but does not tap it. Sorry if you already knew the rule, then this reminder is completely unneeded.

Not a bad assumption though when I first learned to play MTG I was under the impression that when you played a creature spell it came onto the BG tapped (my memory wants to say it even said so in the instructions and may have since it was almost 20 years ago). Enough rambling though Zylo is correct.

Unless it has haste (This creature can attack and TAP as soon as it comes under your control.), it cannot tap in the turn you play it. This is why Cunning Sparkmage is a way better card to use over Prodigal Pyromancer .

To expand on zylo's answer...

The create can not tap to activate it's own ability unless it has haste.

A spell or sorcery (Shared Discovery comes to mind) that taps other creatures can tap the creature that just came into play.

But yeah zylo got this one well covered :)

In short:

-While creatures DO enter the battlefield with summoning sickenss unless they have haste, that does NOT mean they enter the battlefield tapped.

-Summoning Sickness just means they cannot use activated abilities that require them to tap or attack.

-A summoning sick creature CAN still block, be tapped as part of another card (ie Opposition , Earthcraft , etc..), and use abilities such as all of those on Morphling .

Note that if the activated ability cost does not include the "tap this permanent" symbol but instead say "Tap X creatures you control:..." you can pay the cost with creatures still affected by summoning sickness including the one with the ability the permanent is a creature.

another thing to remember is that activated abilities are written in the form of cost : effect. you pay or do whatever is to the left of the colon, then the effect happens - if it has the tap symbol to the left, the creature has to 1) be untapped 2) has to have been under your control at the start of the turn, or have haste. Main reason I said this is that if something comes into play tapped ie Halimar Depths that isnt something you paid, so you dont get the effect.
