How long do sets stay in standard?

Asked by hlaford 14 years ago

I'm relatively new to Magic and I was wondering how long past sets stay legal in Standard. Since M11 just came out and the first expansion is coming, when will ROE STOP being legal? When M12 is released?

Thanks

Every year on the first Friday in October, a rotation happens. On this date, a new set is introduced and the block that was introduced two years ago will cycle out. So, on October 7, 2011, a new set will be introduced, and Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi, and Magic 2011 will all cycle out.

Here's a link with some additional dates:

Is that right Mr.Green? Because, according to the link you posted it looks like only Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn, & Magic 2010 will rotate out of the Standard Format. Below is a copy/paste from the link you posted:

The following card sets are permitted in Standard tournaments:

* Shards of Alara (until October 1, 2010)* Conflux (until October 1, 2010)* Alara Reborn (until October 1, 2010)* Magic 2010 (until October 1, 2010)* Zendikar* Worldwake* Rise of the Eldrazi* Magic 2011 (effective July 16, 2010)* Scars of Mirrodin (effective October 1, 2010)

So that should mean that Zendicar, Worldwake Eldrazi & 2011 will stick around for at least another year right? I mean it seems odd to me to release the 2011 set on 7/16 only to phase it out 3 months later, don't you think?

@cafeman:

Correct, Shards block and M10 rotate out on October 1, 2010. Zendikar block and M11 rotate out on October 7, 2011.
