royal assassin

sorry for all the questions from me lately =/
when someone attacks you with a creature and it taps, then you use royal assassin to destroy the creature, do you still take damage or no?
so is it?: tap + damage > now Royal Assassin can use his ability
or
tap creature = Royal Assassin kills > then damage if you chose not to kill it
I depends on how things work out. Your opponents is supposed to give you a chance to respond to him declaring attackers. During this response is when I would activate the Royal Assassin so that I didn't take damage. But, you could just as easily, if you wanted to for some reason, wait until after combat to use the Royal Assassin and then you would take damage.

Both above are right, but to clarify the steps real quick here they are:
Declare Attackers
Declare Blockers
Damage
If anything happens to a creature that is attacking before the Damage phase (ie, it is destroyed, exiled, bounced, ect.) then it is not there to deal the damage and in turn, no damage is dealt.

you can kill the creature anytime during declare attackers (after attackers have been declared) when you have priority, and anytime during declare blockers when you have priority. If the creature is killed before you get to damage dealt, you won't get hit.

Royal Assassin would kill the creature before it deals damage
