Scion of the Ur-Dragon possible shenanigans

Asked by Demortal 8 years ago

So yeah I just want to know the possibilities of Scion's ability used in response. For example say I have Heartstone in play and I declare an attack with Scion of the Ur-Dragon and then in response for the atack use his ability to copy Savage Ventmaw then in response I use Scion's ability again to copy Hellkite Charger and use Ventmaw's mana to pay for Hellkite Charger's ability for another battle phase? Thank You.

Please link all cards in your questions. Scion of the Ur-Dragon, Heartstone, Savage Ventmaw, Hellkite Charger.

Both the Ventmaw and the Charger have triggered abilities that only trigger when they are declared as attackers. If you were to copy either one of them AFTER you have declared attacks, neither one will trigger. You will not be able to get both abilities in one combat, and the only way to get either one is to make Scion a copy before you declare attacks. I hope this helped!

Please link all cards you are talking about.

Heartstone

Scion of the Ur-Dragon

Savage Ventmaw

Hellkite Charger

First, this doesn't work how you want. "When ____ attacks" triggers happen when the creature is declared as an attacker, not just because the creature is attacking. This means that whatever creature Scion is when it attacks is the trigger you will get.

Second, the rest of your question is more appropriate to the regular forums since it is not a rules question, it is a strategy/help question.

A friend of mine's Commander deck uses Scion of the Ur-Dragon uses him to accomplish an Entomb-like effect, then uses spells like Animate Dead or Reanimate to get a second or third dragon onto the battlefield to accomplish the Hellkite Charger + Savage Ventmaw combo. This is sometimes combined with something like Flamekin Village or Lightning Greaves to get haste.

I just thought I'd mention it was possible to surprise people, just not the way you asked.

Everyone, thanks a lot for the quick response and the information it was very usefull. However I've got another question about Scion of the Ur-Dragon; if an opponent cast Diabolic Edict an I were to sacrifice Scion and in response to that I use his ability to copy Ruthless Deathfang and the in response to Scion's ability I use his ability to copy Destructor Dragon. Will this lastly cause for both Ruthless Deathfang and Destructor Dragon abilities to trigger?

No. The last chance you have to activate scion's ability is before the Edict resolves. So you can either choose for it to be a copy of Ruthless Deathfang when the edict resolves, forcing someone to sac a creature; or it can be a copy of Destructor Dragon, allowing you to destroy a non-creature.
