Sensei's Divining Top being destroyed stack confusion

Asked by omgyoav 13 years ago

Lets say my opponent plays Disenchant targeting my top and then i tap to make it go to the top of my library. What happens if he plays a second disenchant while the first disenchant and the ability are on the stack?

if he plays a second Disenchant in response to card:Sensei's Divining Tops second ability then the top is destroyed

This makes your opposing player an idiot for attempting it, and then the top goes on top of your deck.

The first response is correct. At this point, the stack resolves as: Disenchant , then the top, which is gone, so that fizzles, then the first disenchant, which also fizzles. So, since the top destruction resolves first, it is indeed destroyed.

Keith is correct, but we don't quite have the whole story yet on what happens here.

First, the original Disenchant goes on the stack. Then, the activated tap ability of card:Sensei's Divining Top goes on the stack. The, the last Disenchant goes on the stack.

Now we resolve these items per the "last in, first out" rule. Last in was the final Disenchant , so it goes first. It destroys card:Sensei's Divining Top, which goes to the graveyard.

Next the activated ability resolves. First you draw a card, then the ability tries to put card:Sensei's Divining Top to the top, but can't, because the permanent the ability is looking for is now in the graveyard and not in play, which it would have to be to resolve that part of the ability.

Then the original Disenchant fizzles because it has no valid target.

Net result- card:Sensei's Divining Top is in the graveyard. Its owner has drawn a card. Other guy is down two Disenchant s.
