Shirei Shizo's Caretaker Return creatures to the battlefield

Asked by builderboy7 1 month ago

Player A control's Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker, Mindless Automaton, and a Supernatural Stamina in hand. Player A activates Mindless Automaton's ability to draw a card in Player B's second main phase. When Player B regains priority, they cast Murder targeting Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker and Player A responds by casting Supernatural Stamina targeting Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker. After the stack resolves with Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker getting destroyed and re-entering the battlefield from the graveyard, would Mindless Automaton still be brought back at the beginning of the end step?

If Shirei leaves the battlefield and returns to the battlefield after a creature with power 1 or less is put into your graveyard, Shirei is considered a new object. The delayed triggered ability won’t return the creature to the battlefield. Shirei, as a new object, being on the battlefield when the original Shirei's ability resolves doesn't change anything.

No, Shirei will be counted as a new object and wont see past-versions of itself. Specifically this situation is covered in gatherer:

”If Shirei leaves the battlefield and returns to the battlefield after a creature with power 1 or less is put into your graveyard, Shirei is considered a new object. The delayed triggered ability won't return the creature to the battlefield.”

Some additional info for why this happens: When a card uses its own name in its rules text without also saying something like "a card named [name]...", then it specifically means "this object". When the delayed triggered ability does its check at the end of the turn, it's checking for the specific Shirei that created it, but that particular object is gone now.
