Turning off artifacts by tapping them

Can you still turn off artifacts by tapping them? Say I tap Jinxed idol with a tumble magnet does it still work? I know you used to be able to tap Static orb to turn it off... just not sure on the ruling these days.

No, tapping has no effect on permanents nowadays (unless a card ability specifically says so, but that's rare). The only thing tapping things down does is prevent them from tapping to activate abilities or attacking.

If a permanent has an state based effect (which means that you don't pay any activation cost for the ability) then the ability of the card will keep running until the card or the ability is removed.

However with Jinxed Idol you can shutdown the other ability through something like Pithing Needle or Phyrexian Revoker and prevent or confine that nuisance to some other player.

The sacrificing part is, not the first triggered ability.

Basically send it back to them, play revoker and lawl.
