What are best Protean Hydra supporter cards?

Asked by tyrannosaurusrex 14 years ago

I have a Protean Hydra and I was wondering what I should combine it with to make it awesome.

anything that gives it a static bonus, such as Behemoth Sledge , Glorious Anthem , card:Gaea's Anthem - makes it immune from damage, and always growing, etc. still vulnerable to sweepers like Wrath of God etc, but still pretty handy.

I like Leyline of Vitality and Savage Silhouette . Doesn't do anything about Wrath, but it protects from day-of-judgement just fine :)

I also think a well timed Vampire Hexmage sac could be useful. Instantly double in size.

Well, I think first off you have to think Ajani Goldmane since he stacks on the +1/+1 counters with his -1 ability. You could have liquidmetal-coating make Protean Hydra an artifact and have Steel Overseer give it a +1/+1 counter, then if you have a Voltaic Key , tap it, tap the Steel Overseer and you just got 3 counters and vigilance. Asceticism would help keep him alive for basically all except Day of Judgment . Throw in some basic ramping cards like Birds of Paradise , Llanowar Elves , Lotus Cobra , Arid Mesa and Verdant Catacombs , and you've got a good start for a deck.

Don't forget about totem armors (Bear Umbra , Hyena Umbra , Snake Umbra , etc.). They give him the static bonus to which $ªmHεiπ referred, while also protecting him from Day of Judgment , Wrath of God , etc.

"Asceticism would help keep him alive for basically all except Day of Judgment."

The regeneration ability of Asceticism would actually be a great thing for Protean Hydra to survive a Day of Judgment though the enchantment itself is a little expensive for what it does.

Any proliferate cards would feed the +1/+1 counters as well, don't forget that having things like Contagion Clasp could prove pretty fun and useful. Especially if you decide to splash blue for the thrumming-bird.

Seriously though, there are a number of different things you can do with Protean Hydra . Just remember that if you do, you want to at least have a global effect on your side of the battlefield to get at least +1 defense, so that your creature won't die as a result of battle.

Also note, that if Protean Hydra is damaged with infect creatures, that the +1/+1 counters are removed, and you STILL get double the +1/+1 counters back at the beginning of the end step. why? Because the damage being done is prevented!

Hope this helps.

Lots of mana, and other cards that benefit from a huge mana pool like other X spells or multi-kickers like Wolfbriar Elemental .

(The wolfbriar is especially fun with the Anthems and Leyline of Vitality)

Well, if you aren't going for standard, use Ion Storm.

Predatory Urge works great on Protean Hydra you can kill your opponents creatures and feed your hydra. then if you want to take that a step further Primal Cocoon because if you read predatory urge, he's not actually attacking or blocking. but definitely Predatory Urge for Protean Hydra
