What happens to the damage in an Argentum Armor and Gideon Jura scenario?

Asked by Dracog 14 years ago

If they +2 on Gideon Jura , and I swing with a creature equip with Argentum Armor targeting Gideon, where does the damage go?

Your creature will not do any damage, because Gideon Jura is no longer on the battlefield.

You declared attack at Gideon Jura so, the damage will go to the gidoen-jura you just destroyed essentially having no effect because the target has been removed.

you could attack opponent and destroy Gideon, then they get hit, and lose Gideon.

@brianguymtg, true, but not in this scenario. Remember the scenario includes the opponent using Gideon Jura 's +2 ability so all of he creatures have to attack Gideon.

It's similar to what happens when a blocking creature is killed before combat damage. The attacking creature does no damage because the subject of it's damage is gone.

I know it may be easier to think of it differently, but it is actually important to note that the creature doesn't actually do any damage. An example of when it can be important is a creature with lifelink, if it still dealt damage to the non-existant defending creature it would gain life, but since it does no damage it does not.
