What happens when a spell with X in its casting cost is copied?

Asked by Kalani 14 years ago

Is the value of X the same as the original, or is it zero?

Gatherer ruling as of 10/1/2009:

If the spell Twincast copies has an X whose value was determined as it was cast (like Earthquake does), the copy has the same value of X.

and also 8/15/2010

If the spell Reverberate copies has an X whose value was determined as it was cast (like Earthquake does), the copy has the same value of X.

...so naturally, unless it says otherwise, yes. X stays the same

The full answer is that the variable "X" is chosen and locked in when the spell is cast, thus any copy of that spell copies the locked in cost of "X" as well. Essentially when the spell is played X is replaced with the value chosen and paid for.

Here is the relevant excerpt from the comprehensive rules:

706.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original objects characteristics and, for an object on the stack, choices made when casting or activating it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether it was kicked, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on).
