what is a token's converted mana cost?

Asked by oltskul 14 years ago

in my deck: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/invincible-spinach/ Iam using Favor of the Mighty to protect my zero drop creatueres. Does have creature token ZERO CMC? For example tokens by Gelatinous Genesis . If not, it is going to be VERY large hole in my deck.

Thanks for my comments and answers... OS

Tokens have no CMC. Unfortunately, if your deck has all tokens, Favor of the Mighty will hurt you a lot more than help you. Favor of the Mighty checks for the creature(s) on the field with the highest CMC, not just your side of the field.

That's right. The way I've always played with my friends is that tokens have CMC 0, but checking up the rules:

from rule 110.5b: A token doesnt have any characteristics not defined by the spell or ability that created it.

So unless the spell says the token has converted mana cost of some value, it just won't. Similar to cards like Hypergenesis or Ancestral Vision . According to Gatherer, since they don't have a cost printed on them, they simply don't have a CMC.

I believe the CmC of tokens are 0 as are cards with only X and cards with 0 or no cost listed.

I know that Ratchet bomb can kill tokens when you drop it and sac it with no charge counters on it which means that they would have to have a CmC of 0 for it to work.

As far as Favor of the Mighty goes... your tokens would have to be the only creatures on the field and if they were at 0 CmC they would all be protected, otherwise you would just be protecting your opponents creatures or your non token creatures, whichever creature/creatures had the highest CmC.

202.3a The converted mana cost of an object with no mana cost is 0.

Should check up ALL relevant rulings before giving an answer =P

SO it is no? Ive got little problem with wording :) in czech language you can explain it in more ways.. Ive made new discovery on internet (before i ask something, I allwys search for answer..) after tuning up the Google string i found simmialr thread on one board: "" I believe you're correct:

202.1b - Some objects have no mana cost. This normally includes all land cards, any other cards that have no mana symbols where their mana cost would appear, tokens (unless the effect that creates them specifies otherwise), and nontraditional Magic cards. Having no mana cost represents an unpayable cost (see Rule 116.6). Note that lands are played without paying any costs (see Rule 305, "Lands"). [CompRules 2009/10/01]

202.3a - The converted mana cost of an object with no mana cost is 0. [CompRules 2009/07/08]

And just in case he tries to argue the Kicker as part of the mana cost:

202.4 - Any additional cost listed in an object's rules text or imposed by an effect isn't part of the mana cost. (See Rule 601, "Casting Spells.") Such costs are paid at the same time as the spell's other costs. [CompRules 2009/07/08]

Elemental Appeal doesn't specify a converted mana cost value for the token, so yes, the token's converted mana cost is 0 as you say, and yes, you can effectively Smother it. ""

It is yes. Unless otherwise specified by the effect that generated them, your tokens have a converted mana cost of 0, so as long as there are no other creatures with higher CMC on the board your tokens will have protection from all colours when you play Favor of the Mighty .

If an effect creates a token (or tokens) that is a copy of something somewhere, it will have the mana cost (and thus converted mana cost) of that something. General tokens have a CMC of 0.
