I have been playing for a year and have learned casual with friends and T2 Standard, but I am curious in what extended and legacy are.

Extended is basically the last FOUR blocks (right now, Scars block, Zendikar block, Alara block, and Lorwyn block) and their accompanying core sets.

In Legacy, all cards ever printed are legal except for a list of a few banned cards that are overpowered (such as Black Lotus .

Yeah, I mean all those four sets when I say "Lorwyn Block," though that's weird of course. It's a weird term because you're actually referring to FOUR different sets, but there you are.

The Lorwyn Block was the best block too. _

Also, I know you didn't ask about Vintage, but Vintage is the same as Legacy except that they have some variations in their banned/restricted lists.
