Asked by TowerOfBad 13 years ago

Is it zero? Or does it simply not have one?

mzy10511's correct. They are a treated as having a CMC of 0 (which is different than not having one, as you seem to know).

For the most part, this is correct. MOST tokens have a CMC of 0. However, there are some exceptions.

Any token that was created as a copy of a permanent has a CMC equal to the card it copied. This is because when a copy is created, the copy will have the same value for each of the applicable copiable characteristics. The copiable characteristics are name, MANA COST, color, card type, supertype, subtype, expansion symbol, rules text, power, toughness, and loyalty.

So, when Myr Propagator 's ability creates a token that's a copy of Myr Propagator , the token wlll have a CMC of 3.

The current list of cards that create tokens that don't have a CMC of 0 are Dance of Many , Dual Nature , Echo Chamber , Followed Footsteps , Heat Shimmer , Imperial Mask , Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker , Mimic Vat , Minion Reflector , Mirror-Sigil Sergeant , Myr Propagator , Nemesis Trap , Prototype Portal , Rite of Replication , Soul Foundry , Spawnwrithe , Spitting Image , Splinter Twin , and Sprouting Phytohydra .

That's interesting. I actually didn't know that; I thought that CMC 0 was part of the nature of a token, and didn't get copied.
